Eye Drops Filtration

Eye drop products are produced by aseptic processing and the final products are sterilized, therefore, the microbiological quality of the finished products should meet the steriling requirement . Consequently, the filtration requirements are extremely strict. Some eye drop formulations have high viscosity, making filtration very difficult. In addition, some eye drop formulations contain very low levels of preservatives, which can be easily absorbed by conventional filter cartridges.

 

 

Sterile filtration of eye drops:

• Before filtering the solution, a bubble point test should be conducted on the filter to confirm both the pore size of the filter cartridge and its integrity. Following filtration, it is important to reconfirm the filter's integrity. While the filtration process is underway, careful observation of the solution's color is necessary to ensure it meets the requirements. After the filtration, another inspection should be carried out.

• The medicinal solution is subjected to circulation filtration through a 0.45μm microporous filter for 20 minutes. Following this, samples are collected and tested for content, pH value, and osmotic pressure to ensure compliance. A fine filtration is performed to meet the visible particle inspection criteria. Subsequently, a secondary filtration is carried out by a 0.22μm microporous filter before the medicinal solution is transferred and filled.
