In plant cells, natural products are typically found, and the content of the target product may be exceptionally low. Additionally, in the separation system, there are both impurities with significantly different properties from the target product and structurally similar compounds with little difference in physicochemical properties. Therefore, purifying the target product in a single step is challenging. In the process of separation and purification, it generally involves four steps: extraction from plants, initial separation, purification, and refinement.
During the initial separation stage, due to the complexity of the material in the leaching solution, the content of the target product is low, and there are numerous impurities with similar physicochemical properties to the target product. Therefore, the primary purpose of initial separation often involves using low-resolution separation methods such as multi-step liquid-liquid extraction, adsorption chromatography, and precipitation to remove most of the impurities and concentrate the target product.
After the initial separation, the purification stage requires high-resolution separation steps to remove still existing impurities.
Refinement typically includes decoloration, removal of trace impurities or heat sources, freeze-drying, or crystallization.
